Shane was both exhausted and rejuvenated. Ellie had worked him hard the night before. The aftermath had left him infused with something he hadn’t known was missing. Touch, companionship, and a deeper connection to another person. He’d lived his life by keeping his distance, watching the days go by through a riflescope. The adrenaline rush he got from his job was unlike any other, until now.

Sex with Ellie was heady business, a different type of high. He hadn’t expected it. When she’d climbed on top and rode him hard and fast, the euphoria nearly broke him. He’d had casual sex before, and this wasn’t that. Shane couldn’t identify why, just yet. He figured the familiarity of their sex had more to do with him being home, surrounded by friends, and in his comfort zone.

At first, he’d thought when she’d come on to him it was because she saw his missing limb. He assumed she would stroke his head and rub under his chin like she did her little special needs goats. But she’d done the opposite. She didn’t touch him because she thought he needed it; she’d touched him because she needed it. She’d made that clear in her actions and words, with her greedy hands and mouth. She’d given and taken in equal measures. Without a second glance at his missing limb.

Shane smiled from his good fortune. Here he’d been, all broody about waiting out his med board. Ellie definitely had made the days easier to get through. Shane arched on his mount, a Rocky Mountain Horse named Joe, and let out a yawn while he stretched. When he’d gotten up before dawn with Ellie, he’d checked her truck for tampering, then followed her to the diner. After which he’d driven home, hooked up the horse trailer, retrieved Joe, and took an old but well-traveled hunting road that led deep into the forest toward the foothills of the Bighorns. Here he would begin scouting for signs of a rabid coyote, or whatever, and work his way down toward the ranches.

The first name on Ellie’s suspect list was Mr. Phillips. Phillips owned the ranch to the south of the Greenes' farm. He was a Vietnam veteran and a conspiracy theorist of the highest form. Phillips, like many in Wolf Creek, had suffered losses with the wildfires last spring. Shane figured Phillips was a good place to start. Maybe a motive would be found. Especially if it was true he'd been uninsured at the time of the fires

The Tetons lay to the west of Wolf Creek, Bighorn National Forest to the east. Shane was riding south, the majestic landscapes to each side. The trapped feeling that typically engulfed him when surrounded by the mountains was nowhere to be found. Shane sat back in the saddle and let all the tension and worries ease from him. Since the explosion that threw him from the Humvee transporting him back to base and the second that took away his leg, Shane had been holding on to what would become of him.
